Round 3. *K3 B, K3 A* rep *to* to end

Round 4. Repeat Round 3

Round 5. Repeat Round 2

Round 6. Repeat Round 1

Continue pattern until sock measures 20cm from top or desired length to top of heel.

Work the heel

The heel is worked over 36 sts.

(RS) Still following the 2 colour pattern: K 18 sts, turn.

The rest of the heel will be worked using yarn A only and does not follow the spotty pattern.

  1. P across 36 sts
  2. Row 1 (RS): sl 1, knit across
  3. Row 2 (WS): sl 1, p across.
  4. Rep rows 1 and 2 until you have worked 24 rows in total.

Turn the heel

  1. Row 1: K across 20 sts, ssk, k1, turn.
  2. Row 2: Sl 1, p5, p2tog, p1, turn.
  3. Row 3: Sl 1, k to 1 st before gap, ssk (1 st from each side of gap), k1, turn.
  4. Row 4: Sl 1, p to 1 st before gap, p2tog (1 st from each side of gap), p1, turn.
  5. Rep rows 3 and 4 until 20 sts remain.

Make the gusset

  1. K 10 sts. Using an empty needle, k 10 sts. Now rotate the work and with the same needle, pick up 12 sts along side of heel flap.
  2. K 36 sts using both yarns and continuing the 6 row pattern from where you left off.
  3. Pick up 12 sts (*k1 A, k1 B* rep *to* to end) along other side of heel flap using an empty needle. K rem 10 sts continuing *k1 A, k1 B* rep *to* to end. The heel is now complete and the round begin at the center back of the heel.

Decrease for the gusset — round 1

  1. Needle 1: Continue the alternating pattern on this needle. The stitch you knit into should be the opposite colour of the working yarn you are using to knit the stitch - K to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.
  2. Needle 2: Knit all sts continuing spotty pattern
  3. Needle 3: Knit all sts continuing spotty pattern
  4. Needle 4:. Continue the alternating patten, but note that the 1st stitch will need to be the same colour as the previous round to adjust for the decrease on the next stitch - k1, Ssk, k to end

NB. If you wish to use 3 needles instead of 4, combine needles 2 and 3.

Decrease for the gusset — round 2

  1. Knit all sts with the k1, k1 alternating pattern from above on needles 1 and 4, and the spotty pattern on needles 2 and 3.
  1. Rep rounds 1 and 2 until 72 sts remain.
  2. You can now continue the spotty pattern across all 4 needles. Continue until the sock measures 5cm from the end of our toes/around the bottom of your big toe

Shape the toe

The toe is worked using yarn A only

Needle 2: Ssk, k1, k to end.

Round 2

Knit all sts.

Rep rounds 1 and 2 until 36 sts remain.

Rep round 1 until 18 sts remain.

K to the end of Needle 1. Cut yarn and graft toe – Kitchener Stitch works well for sock toes.

Weave in ends and block.
